hobbema meindert Hobbema Meindert, 16381709, Dutch landscape painter. Baptized in Amsterdam on 31 October 1638, the son of Lubbert Meindert, he early assumed the agnomen of Hobbema. In landscape art Hobbema was second only to his coeval Jacob wagon train Ruisdael, with whom he may have studied. Most of his liveness was spend in a poor district of Amsterdam, where he died a pauper. Hobbema was little appreciated in his day notwithstanding he is now recognized as the last of the slap-up 17th-century Dutch masters of landscape. He varicoloured most of his living bailiwick before 1668, when he took a clerical survey with the metropolis; thereafter he produced very few paintings.
