The Importance of Being Earnest A protagonist is describe as the main character in the story. Thestory line revolves almost this one character and the events in his/her action. In the Importance of Being Earnest, squatting Worthing is theprotagonist of the coquette because it is his character that dominates thenarrative. His pursuit to marry Gwendolen, and the conflicts andstruggles he goes up against to reach his ultimate goal, are traitswhich develop his character into macrocosm the protagonist. For a character to take on the role of protagonist, there always of necessityto be conflict. Jack Worthings first conflict is getting the thanksgiving to marry Gwendolen from her niggle, doll Bracknell. In thebeginning of the story when Jack, also referred to as Ernest, proposesto Gwendolen, but is denied the ability to marry Gwendolen until hehas passed Lady Bracknells serial publication of tests what she sees as asuitable husband for her daughter.
